Scared. Anxious. Tired. Depressed. Overwhelmed. These are the words used by most of my clients when they are coming to see me as a result of separation.

I always ask the same thing. What are you going to do to take care of yourself? Nearly 99% of the time I hear silence.

Separation is considered on of the most significant events a person could endure in their life time. It has been likened to grieving the death of a loved one.

The Kubler Ross model developed by the Swiss Psychiatrist, is a hand out you can expect to find in your client pack, if you come to visit me for an initial consultation. It accurately demonstrates the five stages of grief people endure during separation.

Given the emotional roller coaster most people endure after separation, self care is a must.

Self care comes in many forms and does not have to include the expensive price tag that society would have us believe it comes with.

The art of forest bathing has been relied upon by the Japanese for centuries. Forest bathing, or simply put, spending time in nature or (forests), has been proven to boost the human immunity, lower stress and decrease levels of cortisol (that pesky stress hormone).

Going for a walk on a daily basis is self care in its most simplest form.

Self care extends to having a coffee with a friend. Someone who you can vent too. Cry too. Someone who will make you feel supported.

The benefits of self care from a legal perspective are significant. A client who is calm. Relaxed. Who is sleeping and eating well, is a client who generally makes well informed rational, decisions.  Those clients are the ones who generally child focused and can properly consider appropriate relationships with their now co parent.

We are trying to practice what we preach here at Kalpaxis Legal. Self care is something that can easily get lost along the way.

We would love to hear from you all about what you are doing for self care. Head over to our Facebook page and post your self care ideas / photos.

We hope that you will inspire someone else who is struggling to navigate the journey of separation.
